What triggers a blocked drain?
A clogged drain is usually caused by the gradual accumulation of organic substances such as hair and grease on the inner walls of drain lines. In time, this buildup reduces the regular flow of water through the pipe, similar to cholesterol in the blood vessels. When a jumble of debris or a bunch of hair attempts to pass thru the pipe, it can get caught and totally block the flow. The result is a stopped up tub or kitchen sink drain.
Although a plunger can sometimes unclog small obstructions, a stubborn or persistent clog will call for a visit from one of our qualified plumbers who will bring a tool called an auger (also known as a “snake”). This tool works in a different way than a plunger works. Our plumber will push the snake into the blockage and crank it to send the snake deeper into the clog.
In some cases, the licensed plumber will use an electric snake, which has enough power to get through stubborn clogs. Snakes are very handy because they are long enough to reach obstructions that are lodged deep within a drain pipe and ultimately unclog the drain.
Are there any exceptions? Sometimes a clogged sink, tub, shower or even toilet isn’t caused by debris in your home’s pipes (also called the secondary drains). Rather, the clog is the result of invading obstructions such as tree roots in the sewer main . If our plumber discovers that the clog is caused by this kind of obstruction in the sewer main, it may require that we hydrojet the main line. While we try very hard to provide up-front, transparent pricing, custom jobs like these will require us to give you a quotation for the work.
Some Common Sewer Main Clog Causes in New Jersey
A sewer line blockage is the direct outcome of an object being flushed down the toilet or washed down the drain. Often, the object is a toy or toothpaste tube or any number of things that may accidentally drop into the toilet. The item may clear the toilet but can become trapped or snagged within thesewer pipe.
Another problem area is the kitchen sink, especially sinks with waste disposals.Homeowners often think it is all right to put all kitchen waste down the disposal. This isnot true– items which should never be placed into a garbage disposal include things like grease, any kind of oil and bones. All the aforementioned items can damage or clog your house’s drain system. It only takes a small shard of bone to become trapped in your sewer pipes, snagging other things as they pass by, to develop a clog. Over time, what was a little obstruction grows into a bigger one, causing a total sewer line blockage.
How Does This Get Fixed?
When your main sewer pipe becomes clogged, you will most likely need the services of a professional plumber. Minor obstructions can be cleared by merely removing the sink’s P-trap and clearing out the debris. On the other hand, removing huge clogs that lie further in the drain line is more complicated. These types of clogs will require the plumber to employ a powered plumbing snake to get to and cut through the blockage.
Contamination is a very real hazard and can result from sewage leaks. If wastewater leaks into your office or home the room must be sanitized and disinfected to prevent growth of harmful microorganisms that can cause tentanus, Hepatitus A and Giardia. Over time, sewer water damages can trigger very severe health conditions particularly in the elderly, kids and people who struggle with chronic breathing issues.
Quickly discovering the root cause of the blockage and leak in your drain and sewer pipes will prevent harm to your family’s health and to your home.
